Thing #12- LibraryThing

I entered 5 books in my library. It was easy. I like the fact that you can see how popular is the book, if it has recommendations and reviews. I also find very useful to see what LibraryThing recommends and what other with same titles in their libraries are reading. One of the books that I have is How to Ruin a Summer Vacation by Elkeles, it has a rating of 3.6, 60,219 popularity. The list of members with my books is extensive.

Thing#9

I enjoyed this exercise. Flickrvision is very cool, especially 3D. Spell with flickr, I'm pretty sure that we can find a lot of uses for this tool. Under web applications, I can see teens and tweens using it to make CD covers. Now I know what mashups are.

Thing #8 Flickr

I opened an account but is private. I learned a lot more about what flickr offers. I liked the features; organizr, the guest pass and the make stuff. I search for Galicia, Spain and Puerto Rico. I enjoyed showing my husband were I used to live in Spain for a short time. At that time I didn't have a camera. I have very few pictures of Galicia.

Like I said before, I opened an account and invited close friends and family. It is very easy to upload pictures and tag them. Beside the link for the parrot photos, there is another photo about palma de Mallorca at flickr.com/photos/joserodmon/2148874336. It is beautiful architecture.

Thing # 21

The first time that I look for videos about Puerto Rico. I'm a puertoriquena therefore it was very precious for me to see a lot of very good videos about my island. I embedded one of them to my blog and used the options. It was very easy .

I also searched for libraries, books and book reviews. I found George Lopez for America's libraries. I think that videos like CBS News can be added to a library site. Also videos that pertain to the celebrations for the current month. I search for Black History Month and found several excellent videos.

Thing #22

I found Radio Book Lounge is very good. I heard to Rushdie's far off fairy tales. They interview authors. I also listenedto Naila Keleta Mae. Book Review Noise is also a very good podcast. I listened a review of The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver. I add to my Bloglines, Children of the Earth Podcast Series. I liked this podcast because you can listen to the children talking about their situation in life; how they have to work and the different jobs that they perform.

Thing 19

I wrote a document and also made a presentation. It was very easy to use. Is nice that these tools are available since a lot of students need to work on projects but they can't afford to buy the Microsoft software. I can see myself using these tools and teaching others or letting them know that is available. In the past I have read about it but I never took the time to explore it. To me it was incredible to have something so similar to Microsoft and free.

Thing #20

I browsed various, but I liked FixYa and Pipes. I opened an account with both. FixYa is under Questions and Advice. You post a question, members answer your question and they let you know by sending you an e-mail. I have to be more careful next time I post a question because this time my question was wrongly under webcamera. Pipes is a combination of feeds and information of variety of services. You decide which feeds you want to follow and you could filter such feeds. I think is veryuseful because you need to limit the information since there is no enough time, or interest.

Thing #15

SlideShare is a very good tool. I think that I will use it in the near future. I found some useful presentations under podcast, books and webdesign.

I did have some problems, I could not figure out how to add to my favorites. Thank to Allana, I was able to add two favorite to my account. Now, Allana, I'm having trouble adding NebraskAccess to my contacts. I tried a lot of thing and couldn't add nebraskaccess as a contact. I feel really uncomfortable since I'm sure it's an easy thing to do.

I found tagging very useful and interesting. I spent a lot of time visiting sites about books and photography. I read that Polaroid is coming back by December 2209. Also visit teenread.com and read some of the reviews.

I did found the comments. They are at the bottom of the first page on the respectively site.

For NebraskAccess I would use for tag: books, magazines, genealogy, websites.
I don't see myself using twitter. Santa Fe Public Library includes library hours and reminders of their events. I can see a library using these tool to post reminders if they have a lot of patrons that follows their twitter. Toronto Public Library has an interesting entry, eat or not to eat is a hot topic for their board. My twitter is oreocoqui

Thing #18

I went to the wiki after reading the introduction of thing #18. After I sent an email for help, I figured out how to edit it. Then, I went back to read the exercise, and surprise!! I found the instructions. Next time, Ipromise to read everything.

I looks that PBwiki is very easy to use. I'm glad that this is the case because as I said before I would like to use it but I don't have much time to spend on this project. Also it will be easy to teach other to use the wiki.

Thing # 17

One of the sites that define wiki mentions how libraries could use a wiki to add to the catalog reviews and synopses for books. I think that this is a great idea, another good idea is to create a wiki as a one stop shop for the community. SJCPL wiki includes a list of local authors. Another feature that caught my attention was sandbox, where you can 'play' with your contribution before you add it to the wiki.

Wiki could be use in libraries for discussions, sharing ideas, keeping all the staff inform of changes in the library. The other day a patron ask me where we have the phone books and I was having trouble finding them since they were moved and I didn't know.

Maybe I could use a wiki to encourage businesses in Schuyler to sponsor our summer reading program.

Thing #16

I read all, except better bibliographic services. To me Library 2.0 means integrating the users in all the decisions taking place in a library. It's really a very different way that most of the libraries are operating this days. I'm glad that I'm working at Schuyler Public Libary since we are willing to listen to our users. I think that for some of us the problem is budget. We would love to do a lot more but we are short in staff. I really like the "way from Icebergs"article. I'm glad that our library offers e-books, database, WiFi, our collection can be access through the Internet. We have Auto REpair database also.
